St Bernard Dog

The St Bernard Dog was bred during the middle ages in the Great St Bernard Hospice by monks.

But the dogs never carried casks or small barrels around their necks. These dogs became known worldwide as being excellent mountain rescue dogs.

Begin to socialize your dog early while being still a puppy. It must learn to get along with people and other dogs before it reaches its giant size.

The St Bernard is loyal, friendly and affectionate and has a lot of staying power.

The dog was much smaller in earlier times. It was exported to England in the mid-19th century and bred with mastiffs, this created a larger dog. I doubt that this giant dog would be able to safe anybody in the mountains nowadays. They use smaller breeds nowadays to save people.

Since 1888 the Saint Bernard Dog has been the swiss national dog.
